I appreciate this post a great deal. I struggle with how to embrace existing family traditions which are warm and wonderful, while acknowledging the original holiday history (which, in the case of Thanksgiving, makes me want to pitch the whole holiday altogether), while also appreciating holidays that are not directly of our culture or heritage…it gets quite daunting! I read a piece by Mary- Beth Lambe in Adoptive Parents Magazine where she talked about celebrating the holidays with their large (9 children) multiracial-multicultural family. They mixed everything together, happy with the traditions they created. For an outsider to their family, it seemed complex, but in actuality they simply drew on the heritage of each family member and it all melded together in a beautiful way. I really enjoy that kind of celebration. It may not be 100% authentic to any one tradition, but a wonderful, mindful celebration of life and family nonetheless.
